Petroleum quartz, also known as firefly quartz, is a geological marvel. It is a rare form of clear quartz slowly formed around liquid yellow petroleum, trapping the oil within. The petroleum within these crystals originated from the remains of prehistoric organisms, such as plankton and algae, which were buried deep within the earth. The quartz itself grew around these oil deposits hundreds of millions of years ago. Tiny time capsules of ancient earth. Petroleum quartz is only found in a few parts of the world, such as Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Madagascar.
